Structure and composition of a strongly stratified, tidally pulsed river plume

چکیده
[1] The initial composition of a river plume depends on the cumulative turbulent entrainment within the estuary and how this dilutes the supplied freshwater. Here we examine the relative roles of turbulence and freshwater input using observations from the Columbia River estuary and plume during two periods with contrasting river flow. Within the estuary, intense turbulence observed on flood and ebb stages is controlled by the bottom stress and scales with tidally dominated near-bottom velocity as utidal 3 . Shear associated with the estuarine circulation is found to have a much weaker influence on turbulence dissipation rates. On the basis of these observations, we suggest that properties of the Columbia River tidal plume should be controlled by the ratio of horizontal advection to turbulent mixing within the estuary. This ratio depends on the magnitude of freshwater river input (characterized by its volumetric flow rate Qf) as compared to turbulent fluxes due to tidal mixing. This is summarized in terms of the estuary Richardson number RiE, a nondimensional ratio between Qf and utidal 3 . From 17 tidally resolving offshore surveys during spring/neap tides and low/high river flows, we find that the plume’s median salinity, thickness, and turbulent mixing are each predicted through RiE. It is hoped that these simple formulations will provide guidance in assessing critical properties of river plumes and their influence on coastal circulation.

Observations at the tidal plume front of a high-volume river outflow
[1] We present shipboard observations of very strong convergence, vertical velocities and mixing, and nearbed impacts associated with the leading-edge front of the tidally-pulsed Columbia River plume. With upwellingfavorable winds and riverflow of 4900 ms , the plume propagates as a buoyant gravity current with a rotary, borelike vertical frontal circulation and downwelling as strong as 0.35 m ...

[1] Time‐dependent buoyant plumes form at the outflow of tidally dominated estuaries. When estuary discharge velocity exceeds plume internal wave speed c, a sharp front forms at the plume’s leading edge that expands from the time‐dependent source. Using observations of the Columbia River tidal plume from multiple tidal cycles we characterize time‐evolving plume structure and quantify front spee...

This paper presents findings from a 2-year field investigation of a dissolved hydrocarbon groundwater plume flowing towards a tidally and seasonally forced estuarine river system in Perth, Western Australia. Samples collected from transects of multiport wells along the riverbank and into the river, enabled mapping of the fine scale (0.5 m) vertical definition of the hydrocarbon plume and its lo...

[1] Explanations for the plume of gas, water vapor and ice particles jetting from rifts in Enceladus’ south polar region include boiling of liquid water and dissociation of clathrate hydrates. In either case, production of the plume may be quasi-static or tidally controlled, with implications for the interior structure and composition of Enceladus. Previous quantification of the clathrate expla...
متن کاملInfluence of shielding gas composition on weld profile in pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding of low carbon steel
Weld area and weld depth/width ratio can be considered to be of the most important geometrical factors in pulsed laser welding. The effects of carbon dioxide and oxygen additions to the argon shielding gas on the weld properties in pulsed laser welding of low carbon steel is investigated. Presence of carbon dioxide and oxygen up to 10 and 15 percent respectively decreases the weld geometrical f...
